Couch to Half: What I’d Tell My Beginner Self
A realistic couch-to-half-marathon mindset over ~12 weeks — walk-run respect, gradual long runs, recovery, and why rushing the timeline backfires.
Begin where you are, not where social media is
If you’re new to exercise, get medical clearance when it makes sense and build frequent easy movement before aggressive race goals. Walk-run is legitimate training — not a lesser path. Many strong marathoners still use walk breaks strategically.
I wish I’d given myself permission to be a beginner longer. Pride makes timelines shorter than tissues like.
Twelve weeks is a framework, not a dare
Early weeks are about frequency and habit. Middle weeks grow the long session gradually. Later weeks add light quality only if recovery allows. If life interrupts, extend the timeline — don’t compress months of stress into two weeks.
Progressive overload works; sudden overload is how beginners meet physio waiting rooms.
Support the body outside running
Sleep, protein-aware meals, basic strength or mobility, and shoes with life left in them are not “extras.” They’re how joints and tendons keep up with your ambition.
The next step should always be obvious and kind: show up, keep it mostly easy, recover, repeat. That’s the whole sport, just smaller at the start.
