Easy Runs Feel Too Easy — That’s the Point
Why most runners sabotage marathon fitness by running easy days too hard, and how the talk test and patience rebuilt my base.
My ego paced my recovery runs
For years my “easy” pace was just “slightly less competitive.” I wondered why I was always flat on workout days. The answer was in every medium effort I refused to slow down for.
Easy running is a skill. It feels too slow until your aerobic engine grows enough that the same pace becomes relaxed.
What intensity distribution research keeps saying
Stephen Seiler and others studying endurance athletes often find successful patterns with a large share of easy volume and a smaller share of truly hard work — sometimes called polarized or pyramidal distribution. The details vary by sport and athlete, but the warning is consistent: living in the middle intensity band is a trap.
You don’t need perfect zones. You need honest easy days so hard days can be specific.
The talk test still works
If you can’t speak full sentences, it isn’t easy. Heat and hills make the watch look “slow” at the same effort — believe effort. Save firepower for quality and the long run.
