Rest Days That Actually Made Me Faster
Why rest days rebuilt my marathon fitness, how I choose full rest vs easy movement, and the guilt trap that kept me slow.
The day off is a training session
Rest lowers cumulative stress so the next hard stimulus can land. When I treated rest as optional, my “easy” days became medium forever and my intervals never got sharp.
The first season I scheduled rest like a workout — on the calendar, non-negotiable after long runs — my quality sessions stopped feeling like survival.
Full rest vs active recovery
Some weeks I walk the dog and call it done. Some weeks I need true stillness. I choose the lightest option that leaves me fresher for the next key day — not the option that looks busiest to other runners.
If something hurts in a sharp, joint-y, or worsening way, rest is not a strategy debate. It’s the start of smart care.
Put rest where the stress is
Buffers after long runs and hard intervals are not laziness. They’re how amateurs train like people with jobs and still improve across a twelve-week block.
